Once you have landed a position in your career field, it’s time to look into potential ways to move up in that setting. When seeking to fill openings from inside, hiring managers look for certain characteristics within the employee pool.
It’s a common saying that ‘it is not what you know but who you know’. This is partially true. Contacts show that you are an outgoing people person who is likeable and well connected. Connections can land you higher paying jobs at other companies looking to hire. You can also bring in customers or cooperative business deals for the company you work with.
Education.
Having extra knowledge is also important. Specialised education in your field of work can land you higher job positions faster. Continuing your education shows that you are committed to the trade and you are willing to spend time outside of work to learn more.

Someone who can delegate tasks, solve conflict, and lead the team may well replace their supervisor if they retire or get promoted.

Working with the public is an important part of every job on any level. Employees who work well with people can be trusted with more tasks and can earn a promotion faster. Companies want people with good social skills to represent the company.
