Three signs that you should upskill

If you want to get ahead in your career, it’s important to always ensure your skills stay relevant to the ever-changing trends within your industry. Here are few signs it’s time to upskill.

1.    You’re frustrated.
It’s normal to want a holiday every now and then – we all do. But if taking yourself to work and back has become the biggest hassle, it’s time to give yourself a new challenge.

If you’re going through a busy period at work, and you’re quite stressed, that’s not uncommon. There’s a difference between feeling stressed and being deeply unhappy. If you’re unhappy there might be various reasons for it – are you bored with your job? Do you feel like you could be doing more? Maybe you’re not pushing yourself enough? You’ll know if you’re under-stimulated if:
•    You don’t care about your work as much
•    You can’t wait for 5pm
•    You’re not as motivated as you were

If you still enjoy working for your current company, and don’t want to change jobs yet, perhaps consider starting a new course or suggesting a project that you can head-up. Talk to your manager about any courses that are available to you or ask whether you could take on more responsibilities that could lead to a promotion further down the line. Don’t be afraid to chat to yourmanager – if they care about you and your career, they’ll more than likely welcome your suggestions and want to help you advance.

2. You’ve become lazy, accidentally that is
If you have a work routine and no new responsibilities have been added to your performance areas within a year, it’s time to upskill.

Take a look at your daily responsibilities and try to improve on one thing at a time, especially if you know that existing tasks are taking longer, than they should, to complete. Pay attention to yourtime management skills – what’s keeping you from completing the task at hand? Are you constantly looking at emails that are not work-related? Browsing the internet too much? Try and cut out all the clutter and focus on your task only. A little improvement each week could result in your manager trusting you with bigger responsibilities.

3.    You’re getting jealous
Someone who has joined the company much later than you have, and has far less experience, is moving up the corporate ladder, fast.

You could deny it all you want, but deep down, seeing someone who has less experience than you, get bigger, better work opportunities is never quite what you were hoping for. But what better motivation to improve your skills than to have the feeling of getting left behind, right? If you’re feeling like this, it’s definitely a sign that you want to advance your career. See this as a trigger, a burst of motivation, to work on your own development plan. Assess where you are and think about where you want to be. To help you get ahead in your job you might want to start new projects, or take up new responsibilities, or perhaps learn more about an industry trend that could bring in revenue for your company? Whatever you decide, do it with passion and you’ll soon move up the corporate ladder too.
